The Outdoor Living Room: Bringing the Inside Out

By United Habitats Editorial

Porches, patios, and pergolas that erase the boundary between shelter and sky.

The outdoor living room is not a patio with furniture. It is a space conceived with the same rigor as any interior—defined by ceiling, walls, and floor, but with materials that welcome weather rather than resist it. The ceiling might be a vine-covered pergola, a retractable canopy, or the open sky itself. The walls are hedges, lattice screens, or simply the geometry of neighboring buildings. The floor is stone, gravel, or decking, sloped for drainage and scaled for comfort.

The best outdoor rooms share DNA with the houses they serve. Materials echo interior finishes. Colors reference the palette inside. The threshold is deliberately ambiguous—sliding glass walls that disappear, doors that pivot rather than swing, steps that widen into seating. The goal is not to add outdoor space but to dissolve the distinction between inside and out.
