Courtyards are the primary tool: a private outdoor room surrounded by the house itself, invisible from the street and sheltered from neighboring windows. Water features—a thin sheet falling into a stone basin, a narrow reflecting pool—mask traffic with white noise. Planting is dense and layered, creating acoustic buffers that improve with age.
Construction techniques matter: double-stud walls with acoustic insulation, triple-glazed windows with dissimilar glass thicknesses to break up sound waves, and mechanical systems that are themselves silent. The goal is not to eliminate the city but to filter it, to create a home that participates in urban life while offering genuine refuge from it.
